How we are run

Our place in Ghanaian and world basketball, and the principles we work by.

Our place in basketball

FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, governs basketball worldwide. Each country has one national federation that is a member of FIBA: in Ghana that is the Ghana Basketball Federation, which belongs to FIBA's African zone. The Western Basketball Association is the federation's wing for the Western Region. We work under the federation's statutes and regulations, which in turn follow FIBA's.

Who decides

  • The General Assembly of our member clubs and wings is the association's highest body. It approves the annual report and accounts and elects the Executive Board, as our constitution sets out.
  • The Executive Board runs the association between assemblies and answers to the members.
  • Departments carry out the work day to day: league and competitions, development and programmes, media and public relations, partnerships, finance, welfare and administration.
  • The wings, Western Basketball Referees, Players and Coaches, look after their own communities under the WBA's administration and bring their members' views to the Board.

The principles we follow

  • The game: our competitions are played under the latest FIBA Official Basketball Rules. Every competition publishes its rules on this website.
  • Registration and licences: players, coaches and officials are registered with the association and licensed through the national federation. A player who already holds a licence keeps it; a player whose licence is pending may play while it is processed.
  • Transfers: a registered player moves to another team only through the association's transfer process, never through a sign-up form. Moves between countries need a letter of clearance under FIBA's regulations.
  • Integrity: everyone involved follows the FIBA Code of Ethics. Betting on, or fixing, any part of a game in which you are involved is forbidden. We follow the FIBA Anti-Doping Rules.
  • Safeguarding: young players come first. Coaches and officials who work with children are expected to follow the national federation's and FIBA's safeguarding guidance, and concerns can be raised in confidence with the association.
  • Fair discipline: misconduct is dealt with by a fair hearing, with the right to appeal to the national federation.
  • Open books: fees, sponsorship and donations are recorded, receipted and reported to the members.
  • Everyone welcome: boys and girls, men and women, in every community of the region.
